Bayside is a small village on the southwestern shore of Copano Bay, about 25 miles north of Corpus Christi on FM 136 in Refugio County. FM 136 is the only paved road connecting the community to the wider highway network, it runs northeast from SH-35 near Sinton across flat coastal prairie to the bay. A breakdown anywhere along that stretch means a long-distance tow from Rockport, roughly 15 miles east, or from Refugio, roughly 25 miles north. The Refugio County boat ramp on Copano Bay is the only public launch on the bay's west shore. Anglers driving from Corpus Christi, Victoria, and San Antonio use it to access speckled trout and redfish that hold in the bay's shallow grass flats. The ramp reopened in January 2024 after Harvey-era repairs, then closed again six months later when Tropical Storm Alberto's surge damaged it in June 2024. Refugio County applied for a $990,000 GLO grant to build breakwaters protecting the ramp from future surge. Trailer wheel-bearing failures, blown tires, and dead tow-vehicle batteries at a single-lane remote ramp are the primary call types here. Harvey's storm surge reached three to six feet above ground level at Copano Bay on August 25, 2017. A large section of the bay-side access road was eroded and washed away. The Bayside pier south of a local fishing lodge was destroyed. Flood-recovery towing along FM 136 and the waterfront access roads is part of the market after any tropical system moving through Copano or Aransas Bay.
