Odem sits at the junction of US-77 and SH-359 in southwest San Patricio County, about 20 miles northwest of Corpus Christi. US-77 is a busy north-south truck route carrying freight between the port and the Rio Grande Valley, high-speed commercial traffic mixing with farm vehicles on a highway that hasn't been upgraded to interstate standards yet. SH-359 connects Odem west toward Tynan and Mathis, picking up farm-to-city traffic from the cotton and sorghum fields that surround the town. FM 666 and FM 631 run south and west from town through the farmland, carrying loaded grain trailers and cotton-gin trucks during harvest season. Those farm roads weren't built for the weights they're carrying, and a soft shoulder or a blown tire on a loaded truck can turn into a stuck vehicle fast.
